Photojournalist Ibrahim Nofal on the loss of most his family

Original Social Media Post

"During the filming of a documentary about my life, the director asked my late mother—may God have mercy on her—about my relationship with my sisters. She spoke of it with tenderness, especially when she mentioned Abu Yahya: “I could never bear to be home without him, knowing he was on his way back. I could never endure his absence… so how could I endure now, when I know he will never return? I remember… Abu Yahya and I carried my brother Omar to his grave. Later, he and I laid my mother to rest. And today… I carried him too, and placed him in the earth. Why am I left here, alone, with no one? Everyone I love has gone to a better place. I know I cannot question God’s wisdom… but my heart aches for them. The weight of this grief is too heavy—it could break mountains. And I am no mountain, no hero… just an ordinary soul trying to stand. God placed patience in our hearts, but even patience does not silence the longing. I miss them. I want to be with them. Lord, grant me the mercy of joining them soon. There is no life without your mother and your sisters. There is no breath… nothing but pain, grief, and the hollow ache of loneliness. The door to prayer feels shut, the pillar that held me up is gone… what is left for us in this life? May God have mercy on them and grant them paradise. Blessed are they—together now: Omar, Abu Yahya, and my mother, side by side.”" - Source

Event Notes

Assassination of Al-Jazeera crew at Al-Shifa hospital

Around 11:20 pm, an Israeli airstrike targeted the tent o Al-Jazeera's staff at Al-Shifa Medical Complex, killing 6 journalists including renowned Al-Jazeera correspondents Anas Al-Sharif and Mohammed Qriqea.

The massacre also injured journalists Ahmad Al-Harazin, Mohammad Sobh, and Mohammad Qayta.

The IDF assassinated them after a long campaign of incitement— and murder—against Palestinians journalists, particularly Anas whom it accused repeatedly and without evidence of being an agent of Hamas.

The assassination came on the anniversary of one of Israel's most gruesome massacres at Al-Tabi'in school where Anas had documented some of his most poignant reporting. Shortly after the latter, the IDF's arabic spokesperson Avichay Adraee incited against Anas, and continued to do so several times throughout the next 12 months. The IDF put Anas on a kill-list of journalists and continued inciting against Anas after his reporting on the devastating effects of Israel's starvation policy starting late July.

Former US army EOD export Trevor Ball noted that the damage pattern seen in the aftermath is "consistent with an Israeli Mikholit bomb. They've (IDF) also used the Mikholit is similar strikes on media tents in the past."

Names of the martyrs:

  1. Anas Al-Sharif "Abu Salah" (correspondent for Al Jazeera)
  2. Mohammed Qriqea "Abu Zain" (correspondent for Al Jazeera)
  3. Ibrahim Daher "Abu Karim" (Al Jazeera cameraman and volunteer paramedic)
  4. Mohammad Nofal "Abu Yahya" (Al Jazeera crew assistant photojournalist)
